Weekly seasonal bird walks are offered at Oscar Scherer State Park. Venice Audubon conducts the bird walk on the 1st and 2nd Thursdays, November through March.

Several locations in the park will be visited where Scrub Jay families have been regularly seen. The trails are sandy. Walks cover about 2 miles and take about 2 hours.

Park opens at 8:00 AM. Park entry fee of $5 per car. Meet at the park Nature Center at 8:30 AM.

Little Naturalists: Little Nature Detectives (Saturday, November 07, 2026)

Children ages 3 to 5 years old and an accompanying adult are invited to learn about the natural world all around us by looking for clues in nature. Big Naturalist and environmental educator Eileen Gerle leads this hour-long program that includes story time, a nature walk, and a craft.

Please sign up for each month separately. The themes are:

November 7 - Little Nature Detectives
December 5 - Sensing Nature
January 2 - Colors of Nature
February 6 - Recycling Fun

Children are asked to wear sturdy, closed footwear and to bring a water bottle. Registration is limited to twelve to ensure a small group experience.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for each month invidually.

PLEASE NOTE: This year's program takes place at Shamrock Park Nature Center, 3900 Shamrock Dr., Venice, FL 34293. There is no fee but donations are welcome.

Lakeview Park Field Trip (Tuesday, November 10, 2026)

Lakeview Park in Sarasota borders Lake Sarasota and there are ponds and mature live oak trees on the property, so it is great for viewing herons, egrets, raptors, woodpeckers and songbirds.

The park address is 7150 Lago Street. After turning into the park (use the entrance next to Oak Park School), drive all the way to the end of the road.

Meet by the bathroom facilities at 8:00 am.

Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center Field Trip (Friday, November 13, 2026)

With 210 acred preserved along mangrove-lined Lemon Bay, the park is a nice place to learn about coastal habitats. The trail system extends through pine flatwoods with mature slash pines, mangrove forests, and wetlands where birds gather.

Pam DeFouw, Executive Director of Wildlife Center of Southwest Florida, will provide a brief history of Venice's Wildlife Center of Southwest Florida and how the Center is addressing the needs of wild birds in our area of southwest Florida. Learn how to help our bird population both in emergency situations and over the long haul.

Manasota Scrub Preserve Field Trip (Saturday, November 21, 2026)

An excellent bird walk when migrating birds stop by this beautiful 154 acre preserve which is part of the Lemon Bay watershed. About two miles walking along level trails.

Meet at 8:00 in the parking area. No water or restrooms available.

What exactly do bats do all day and night? Are they friends or foes in our ecosystems? Join us for a discussion of one of our most misunderstood mammals: bats. We will learn the natural history, fun facts, and beneficial aspects of Florida’s native bats. Learn what bats are in our area and why we want them here!

2026 Christmas Bird Count (Sunday, December 20, 2026)

The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is the oldest community science project in the United States with the first count taking place on December 25, 1900. The history of this event has grown tremendously since then and occurs annual between December 14 and January 5, utilizing thousands of volunteers throughout the country.

Venice Area Audubon Society, a long-time participant in this project, adds to the national bird count by surveying the local Venice-Englewood area annually on one designated morning. Over 100 volunteers survey a 15-mile circumference circle extending from downtown Venice to I-75 to Manasota Key. Volunteers proceed to specific locations to observe and record the species and number of birds sighted, then report the information to the VAAS Christmas Bird Count coordinator for submission to National Audubon.

New volunteers and new birders are welcome. We are especially in need of mid-level birders.

Friday Sunset Rookery Walk (Friday, January 01, 2027)

Join us for an approximately 45 minute, docent-led sunset walk around the Rookery Pond. Gather at the Rookery Park pavilion to meet your walk leader, then head to the pond and the short, trail/path walk (approximately 1/3 mile) around the pond while learning about the natural history of the bird species on the Rookery island and in the park.

The walk will feature nesting Great blue heron, Double-crested cormorant, Anhinga, White ibis and more as the breeding season proceeds into the spring. Little blue heron, Glossy ibis, Green heron, Purple martins and other birds are also seen around the pond and park throughout the spring season.

Alligators patrol the pond surrounding the Rookery island. The walk ends in time to for you to watch the park's resident bats leave their bat houses near the pond to begin their nightly feeding.

Dress for the weather including a light jacket on cool evenings, bug spray, and water, if needed. Binoculars will enhance your viewing experience. Limited binoculars are available for loan.

Registration is not required.

Read her first person story in Fastest Things on Wings as she recounts her encounters with the winged jewels that rewrote her purpose and helped develope the special relationship she holds with hummingbirds in Los Angeles and beyond.
